The Farm Story

In 2014, we purchased a small piece of forested land and moved our lives and our business from Palmer, AK to Haines, AK with the goal of starting a farm to start breeding northern seed varieties. We believed Haines was the best climate to do this work due to it's longer summer season, deep snow pack, rich soil, many microclimates, and lower rainfall that other areas of Southeast Alaska.

The next year, we set up a camp in our woods and spent the next 6 months living in a tent while clearing the land, building our yurt as our year-round home, working full-time jobs, and managing the local farmers market, all while continuing to keep Foundroot afloat. By 2016 we had cleared a 1/4 acre garden space and lived indoors once again.

In 2017 we broke ground at leased space on an old homestead field one block from our home referred to locally as the Henderson Farm. Foundroot's production field became operational in 2018 and we established a market garden to begin growing seed and provide seasonal produce to Haines and Juneau.

We have done all of this work out of pocket, investing an enormous amount of sweat equity and our own finances to bringing Foundroot into fruition, all while working other jobs to keep this project going. 2020 was the first time Foundroot saw both owners fully self-employed by the business year-round.

In 2021, we will be expanding our production field from a 1/2 acre to a full acre, establishing two hoop houses, and bringing on staff to increase our production to meet the increasing demand for fresh produce and flowers in our region. After nearly 10 years of developing Foundroot, we finally have the infrastructure and labor available to truly accomplish what we initially set out to do. The customers that have supported us along the way are what allowed us to get to this point. Thank you.
