Solanum lycopersicum

Maturity: 70 days from transplant
Determinate
Lovingly bred by Singing Nettle Farm in Palmer, Alaska using agro-ecological methods.
Podsnezhnik is Russian for "snowdrop" and this cold hardy tomato has truly earned the name. This early ripening variety is known for it's exceptional flavor described as the "tomatoiest of tomatoes" by the grower. Large 3.5-4.5oz round slightly flattened red fruit resist cracking and have a strong, true tomato flavor with a sweetness and rich aroma. Low growing bush plants grow 2 feet tall and can be difficult to stake. Very prolific, Podsnezhnik can yield upwards of 4 lbs per plant. Meaty fruit will hold up to sauces but are best enjoyed fresh.
Tomatoes are a challenging crop in the north and require warmth and extra care to reach maturity.
FROM THE FARMERS
Oh boy, are we excited to share this one. Podsnezhnik was originally discovered in the Seed Savers Exchange (the real exchange, not the online store) by Pingo Farms in Fairbanks, AK where it was bred out. Our friend Zoe discovered it there where she brought it back to her farm up Lazy Mountain in Palmer, AK. She then proceeded to breed it OUTSIDE for three seasons to narrow in on the most cold hardy, short season strain.
Full disclosure: we usually won't sell any varieties that we haven't grown for at least one season. Zoe and Leah farmed together Leah's first summer in Alaska in 2011 and had being doing so before and forever after. We may trust her more than we trust ourselves. Let's all try this baddie together.
PS- No, we absolutely don't feel confident in our pronunciation either.
