The Palestinian Soap Cooperative works with traditional makers of Palestinian olive oil soap from Nablus, a city that has continuously produced pure olive oil soap for the past thousand years. They support local farmers along with the artisans to keep the Palestinian culture and tradition around olive oil thriving for the next millennia.
'The Land' is made by the Women's Soap Co-operative of Beita, just south of Nablus. The newest of the Nablus soap brands, Al-Ard is a third-generation family-run Palestinian grocery company founded in 2008 in order to provide local farmers with modern facilities and a global customer base. The Anabtawi family has deep roots in Nablus and manages the production of this soap.
Since they work in small batches and are connected with many local small producers, their olive oil is often among the very best. The cooperative's equipment is all stainless steel and run electrically, compared with other brands which use gas or wood burning furnaces to cook their soap.
Nablus soap is the only 100% olive oil soap still produced in the traditional way. Made from three ingredients --- olive oil, water, and lye --- it is cooked slowly on high heat for a week, before being hand cut, stacked, and dried for up to 8 months. It is unscented and is great for cleaning veggies, dishes, and your soil worn gardener hands.
