Originating in Hungary in 1941, Hungarian Hot Wax is a great all-purpose pepper that helps bring some heat to the frozen north. The banana-shaped waxy pepper average 5” and are traditionally harvested light green to yellow but will have increased heat if left to turn golden orange to red. Peppers can be used for frying, stuffing, and are delicious when used for pickling in mixes or on their own. Supposedly a mild pepper, we have found these to get seriously hot, even when green. Hungarian Hot Wax has been our most reliable pepper, even in a cool wet summer, but we always grow them inside a hoop house.
Peppers are a challenging crop in the north and require warmth and extra care to reach maturity.
