Sasha's Altai was brought back to the USA by renowned seed grower, breeder, and educator, Bill McDorman in a 1989 seed seeking mission in Siberia. His translator introduced him to a dear friend, Sasha, who claimed these as the best tomato in all of Siberia. He had bred them to thrive in his harsh mountain garden and walked 35 km each way to gift them to Bill. A true treasure. These early maturing 3-5 oz red slicers have a much firmer, meatier texture than other early varieties. Famous for its flavor, Sasha's Altai was chosen by Organic Garden Magazine as one of the 10 best early tomatoes in the world.
FROM THE FARMERS
We have known about Sasha's Altai ever since Leah first studied with Bill in 2011. We let this beauty sneak into our 2024 paste tomato trial to see whether we had better success with her than in the past and we sure did. Big, beefy tomatoes were leaps and bounds earlier than the other large tomato varieties we trialed. Super tasty and BIG.
Note: these guys cracked like crazy and hated our wet fall. We believe that we could have much more success with prioritizing an early planting and early harvest which we will do in 2025. We are also curious to see how they do in a less soggy area of the north. Go forth growers! Send us your results.
