Cucurbita maxima
30 seeds
Maturity: 90-100 days
A Japanese heirloom, Uchiki Kuri is a Hubbard squash with beautiful 3-4 lb teardrop-shaped, red-orange fruit. Absolutely massive crawling sprawling plants reaching at least 2' in any direction and wander on from there. A delicious variety with smooth, sweet nutty flesh that is great for roasting or in baked goods. Best grown under cover to reach full maturity. Excellent storage through winter.
FROM THE FARMERS
Uchiki Kuri has proven to be our most successful winter squash and we have given them a lot of love over the years, as it's Leah's most favorite vegetable. We have had success growing them outdoors in a hot summer but more often than not, the massive sprawling plants don't thrive outside of the hoop house. With proper warmth, these plants are very prolific and feel worth their weight in gold.
Open-pollinated squash needs to be hand pollinated if grown without insects present such as inside a hoop house or greenhouse.
