Pisum sativum
50 seeds
Maturity: 70 days
Certified organic seed grown by Horton Nash at 6,300 feet in Paonia, CO.
Translated from Schweizer Riesen, this is a very old heirloom that holds an important place in Swiss culture. Excavations beneath houses of ancient Swiss lake dwellers dated garden peas back to the Bronze and Stone Ages. Tall vines need sturdy trellising as they can reach upwards of 6' tall. Pretty purple, pink, and burgundy flowers can be harvested to decorate salads along with leaves and tendrils. Tender, sweet, giant green pods are prolific and meant to be harvested while flat and eaten whole at 4-5".
Legumes need to be inoculated to fix nitrogen and have viable yields. If you haven't inoculated your seeds before and/or haven't grown legumes in the soil you'll be growing them in this year, we recommend you use this product.
FROM THE FARMERS
Super duper giant peas. Full disclosure, a porcupine got into our pea trial in 2023. It was devastating. These guys survived and kept growing into a revelation of peas. Did they keep growing after the chomp line? We couldn't say, it was a mess, but we like to think that they are magic peas à la Jack and the Beanstalk. We nearly missed this great discovery and we are so grateful we didn't. If we can start getting a reliable supply, this will become our go-to snow pea. Limited stock. Buy now, save your seeds, make more friends by gifting giant peas.
PS-We have a grant to put in permanent fencing in 2024 as we restart our main production farm. Foundroot vs. Porcupine. We shall prevail.
